Red Pyramid
These young boys proudly posed for the camera on the way to Dashur. Then they wanted to see the digital image.
The Red Pyramid is the first true pyramid. It was built around 2,600 BC and possibly was for the Pharaoh Snefru. The Red Pyramid is over
300 feet high, and is entered by a single shaft.
The single entrace is around 170 feet up the side of the pyramid. In this photo the erosion of the past several thousand years is evident.
The entrance shaft of the Red Pyramid is 180 feet long and about four feet high. The angle of descent is 26 degrees.
Hand rails and a floor with rails have been added for today's tourists.
Lucille and Tyler sit in the first room entered after the ramp. The entire pyramid was looted in antiquity.
The second chamber provides an entrance to the tomb room. A modern
scaffolding has been built for access.
Black marks on the walls are smoke stains from the ancient looters. The unique overlapping blocks for these
interior rooms would be the model for
later pyramids.
